Nassau/Suffolk Law Services Committee, Inc.Vivian Storm, attorneyCarly Sommers, attorneyNassau/Suffolk Law Services Committee, Inc. is a nonprofit, community-based poverty rights program that provides legal assistance in civil (non-criminal) matters to low-income individuals in Nassau and Suffolk counties in New York City`s Nassau and Suffolk counties. The program provides free legal advice in thousands of cases each year, as well as legal support to every church, agency, and grassroots organization working with the poor. There, volunteer lawyers offer free advice in areas such as bankruptcy, divorce and family problems, employment, mortgage foreclosure and landlord-tenant issues, senior issues, immigration and other general legal matters. The Legal Aid Society (“LAS”) provides free representation to those accused of crimes in the Nassau County Court and the Nassau County District Court. The services are for people who cannot afford a lawyer. LAS also represents clients in family law matters relating to child care and custody. Our lawyers have also provided pro bono legal assistance to numerous charities and nonprofits, including: Boy Scouts of America`s Suffolk County Council, Long Island`s Make-A-Wish Foundation, National Multiple Sclerosis Society`s Long Island Chapter, Long Island`s United Way, Mentoring Partnership of Long Island, Chabad of Port Washington, Fair Media Council, Catholic Charities, Molloy College, Long Island Regional Planning Council, Kids in Need of Defense [KIND], Long Island Children`s Museum, Long Island Arthritis Foundation, Safe Center of Long Island and others. We give back to the community through pro bono and pro bono legal services. Touro Law has set up a hotline to answer legal questions arising from the pandemic. Volunteer lawyers will provide recommendations to our own clinical program and appropriate legal partners on a variety of legal issues. The helpline is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:00. Students and lawyers offer community members free assistance or referrals on a variety of topics, including landlord-tenants, civil liberties, bankruptcy, labor rights, unemployment, stimulus packages, insurance, and more. This group offers a wide range of legal services, including direct representation (where a lawyer is responsible for your case), advice and information, self-help materials and referrals to other support organizations.
