This article analyses the status of museums in the discourse on “Culture and Development”. It is motivated by the argument that the fields of museology and development are converging because development is increasingly concerned with cultural factors, while museums have been reimagined as actors of development. As a result, museums are at the heart of debates on culture and development. However, an analysis of museological discourse and cultural and development policies shows that, despite overlapping concerns with issues such as social inclusion, cultural diversity and bottom-up methods, there is little cross-sectoral awareness of these commonalities. Surprisingly, museums are largely excluded from cultural and development debates because they are perceived as Western, unrelated to contemporary development challenges and institutions that contribute to social exclusion. However, an analysis of the problems faced by development actors in addressing cultural factors shows that participatory approaches to museology can indeed provide useful information for the field of development. This invalidates the exclusion of museums from cultural and development debates and justifies increased cross-sectoral cooperation. Show your culture.
