Veteran Legal Institute

Located in the center of the intersection of Highways 5 and 22 in Santa Ana, California, with a satellite office in Tustin, California, VLI is a public interest law firm that provides low-income veterans with the kind of zealous advocacy that helps them achieve a better quality of life. The Veterans Legal Institute (VLI) is proud to announce its annual fundraiser, Lawyers for Warriors, which has raised over $175,000 to help veterans in need. Military service changes a life forever, and generous supporters have ensured that pro bono legal services are available to homeless and low-income veterans. The hybrid face-to-face virtual event took place on November 8, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. and featured notable speakers and inspiring testimonials. All faithfully reflected our commitment to serving the heroes of our communities. Wright Ford Young & Co. remained the main sponsor. Special messages included Medal of Honor recipient Jack H. Jacobs. Recipients included Law Firm of the Year – Sheppard Mullin, Veteran Lawyer of the Year – Sheila-Marie Finkelstein, Community Partner of the Year – Orange County Community Foundation, Veteran of the Year – Andrea Bird-Steiner and Lawyer of the Year – Jeff Roberts. The Benevolent Fund is dedicated to improving the community and advocacy of Orange County by facilitating access to justice. In addition, the Veterans Law Institute® is constantly looking for lawyers, paralegals and other volunteer volunteers. The Institute of Military and Veterans Law is a world-class research and educational institute. The institute also has a legal clinic that provides pro bono representation to military personnel and veterans. The clinic provides legal representation on issues ranging from discharge upgrades, group trauma service life insurance calls, VA benefit calls, and matters related to the Civil Military Relief Act. It has recovered millions of dollars in performance, judgments and settlements for its clients. Thank you to VLI`s supporters, staff, volunteers, Board of Trustees, and U.S. Veterans Academy for recognizing the transformative impact of the Veterans Legal Institute`s free legal aid on low-income veterans and their families by presenting us with the National Justice Award. We pledge to continue our good fight to ensure that low-income veterans receive the very justice they stand for.

The Veterans Legal Institute® (VLI) is one of the few not-for-profit public interest law firms in the country dedicated exclusively to the legal needs of current and former military personnel. Ranked among the country`s leading experts in military law, the faculty of the Institute of Military and Veterans Law not only conducts academic research and writing, but also conducts high-profile litigation on behalf of military members and veterans. VLI employees hope to enable customers to achieve a higher level of self-sufficiency and live the lives they deserve. The Institute of Military and Veterans Law offers competitive experiential scholarships open to competitively selected 2L, 3L and LL.M students. Fellows who are offered positions receive a scholarship from Chapman University. Fellows are usually selected at the end of the spring and fall semesters. Interested applicants should contact Professor Rotunda by email for more information on the application process. This goal is achieved through monetary donations to carefully selected Orange County rights-related organizations. The Military and Veterans Law Institute is located on the campus of Chapman University and is located at 343 N Cypress, Orange, CA. The OCBA Charitable Fund awarded $205,000 in grants to 15 Orange County legal organizations and programs in 2018 and has awarded more than $1,200,000 in grants to legal organizations in Orange County over the past 10 years.

The Institute`s founder and CEO, Professor Kyndra Rotunda, has published two manuals and a third book for practicing lawyers. His first book, Honor Bound: Inside the Guantanamo Trials (Carolina Academic Press, June 2008), was followed by his textbook Military and Veterans Law (Thomson/West Publishing, 2011). This is the first manual of its kind for the growing number of military and veteran legal clinics across the country. The Institute`s faculty is the go-to expert on all matters relating to military and veterans` law. They testified before Congress on issues ranging from military elections at Guantanamo Bay to personnel issues affecting military personnel. They also regularly appear on national and international television and radio shows and regularly publish opinion pieces in publications such as the Wall Street Journal and the Chicago Tribune. Check out the latest blog posts from the Institute of Military and Veterans Law. Rotunda`s third book, aimed at practicing lawyers and academics, is Civil Protections and Remedies for Veterans and Servicemembers (Thomson Reuters, July 2017).
